He was born in Medinskaiai, Lithuania. In 1973 he graduated from the Vilnius Institute of Fine Arts, and since 1980 he has lived in Poland. A painter, printmaker and draftsman, he often uses the "dry pastel" technique. He has drawn for, among others, "Polityka", "Literatura", "New York Times", created posters, illustrations for books (especially children's fairy tales), ex-librises, set designs, installations and spatial compositions, masks, paratheatrical actions. Incredibly popular, he has gained recognition from professionals, and the public. He translated his childhood experiences from a Lithuanian village into the language of universal symbols and metaphors, and created his own style. He depicts a fairy-tale, mysterious world populated by button-eyed humanoids. His figurative art is characterized by an atmosphere of surrealism with touches of irony and the grotesque. He uses various techniques: gouache, oil, pastels, and employs a variety of graphic techniques.
